What is your favourite car build of all time?
As far as the ones that Gas Monkey has built, I’m a very big fan of our Ferrari F40 that we built. And, you know, I’d say that was our most challenging and most expensive build, and we did something that, you know, even Ferrari said couldn’t be done.
So, Richard, name a few modern cars that you reckon might end up as future classics, and why do you choose these?
I think that the new cars coming out of Detroit from the big three are definitely going to be classics. I think that, you know, in the 80’s and 90’s and the early 2000’s, the cars that were coming out of America, your muscle cars were not very fast and they weren’t very stylish, they weren’t very cool.
And I think the new stuff is out especially like Dodge with the new Challengers and, you know, the Hellcat Challenger and things like that. And Ford and Chevy are following suit with high horsepower, really well styled cars. I think that we’re in an age right now where the new cars are definitely going to be classics.
Who is your inspiration and why?
My Dad was my inspiration. He always worked really, really hard to provide for me and Daphne. And he never really could afford a Hot Rod or a motorcycle of his own that was super nice. And he taught me to work hard and enjoy life and he always wanted me to do better than him. And looking back, he did pretty good!
What are your thoughts on today’s automotive culture?
I really think that we’re reaching the stride that we haven’t seen since the 60’s and 70’s.
I think that a lot of people are really into it. It’s because of the Internet and because of the advent of so many companies and making so many parts that are readily available. I think that we’ve gotten a surge. It’s the will of people of all ages, but especially the younger generation customising their cars themselves and not paying somebody else to do it.
So where do you see yourself in the future of automotive universe?
Well, you know what, I hope I’m still doing the same thing. This is the best time of my life and everything is a lot of fun. I mean, I get up every day and play with cars, and drink beer. So I got it mate! I hope I’m still doing the same thing.
Do you have any plans to expand globally?
Yes, I would love to. I don’t have any hard-set plans right now, but it would be nice.
We do have our apparel and shirt, and hat, and we’ve got the book out and things like that. So in a way, we are global, but as far as having shops in other places in the world, yes, I’d love to. I don’t, you know, and hopefully we’ll be there soon. We are expanding, you know, the restaurant and I probably I don’t think that in Season 3 I’ve seen that yet, but we will be opening Gas Monkey Bar & Grills.
Cool! So then in your opinion, how would you explain the connection between cars, music, and food?
You know what, it really does all go together because if you’re in your car, you’re listening to music and you’re probably going to get a burger. So it’s all part of the culture itself.
