With over 10 years of experience in performance tuning, M-Tek has been researching and developing chip tuning boxes for turbocharged petrol and diesel engines across multiple vehicle brands. REV speaks to Simon and Stanley, the driving force behind M-Tek
From what age did you have an interest in cars?
We started to have interest in car performance upgrade even before entering the working world. Research into the automotive world commenced when we were in University.
How did M-Tek get started?
Our very first product was tested on a MkV Volkswagen Golf about eight years ago.
But the brand was not labeled as M-tek. We used another brand name to develop a high quality performance product for turbocharged Volkswagen and Audi cars.
About three years ago, we started to re-brand our performance ECU name as M-Tek ECU Power Kit, after conducting a marketing survey research. We have technological tie-ups with German partners to develop power kits for more cars, namely BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, Ford and Hyundai. There will be more car models coming up!
Do you just tune cars? Have there been other non-car vehicles that you have tuned?
Basically, we are currently focused on having trial runs for as many cars as possible, in order to ensure that our mapping can optimise the performance of individual cars. Interestingly, we have also forged a business partnership with a supercar agent in Taiwan. We will help them to re-tune those supercars to keep carbon emissions in check.
Name the hardest vehicle you have ever tuned…
We have no issues with most continental cars. But we encounter some difficulties on car model that are imported into China, due to the various petrol grades that differ from state to state. We have resolved this issue, with the help and guidance from our business partners in China.
What’s the main challenge of tuning a car that is completely running on stock components?
There is a need to focus on the upgrade of brake systems and chassis strengthening, . over and above performance enhancements. Most importantly, the driver must be able to get used to the various settings, because different states of tune are catered for different categories of cars.
What would be the important parts to change if you want to generate more power beyond ECU tuning?
Several core processors, for example: 4bit, 8bit, 16bit and 32bit, with choices from 1MHz to 48MHz from the machine frequency selection.
Do you have partnerships with performance hardware manufacturers (eg: exhaust, intake, turbo, etc)?
Yes we do. We have partnerships with part manufacturers like exhaust systems, intakes and turbines etc…
How many people are working in the R&D team?
There are a total four to six people in the research team in charge on hardware, software testing and tuning.
What would the challenges be for tuning in different parts in the world, especially in Singapore where it can be hot and humid?
We went to various countries to make adjustments, taking into consideration the climate and oil quality to make sure that cars with the M-Tek software perform well.
How much different are the maps produced for Singaporean cars compared to a map for a car in a cooler country like Taiwan?
Basically, the M-Tek ECU module controls the sensor, boost, manifold, valve and camshaft. For the Singapore climate, we’ll do some tweaks to the turbo pressure, fuel and ignition.
What is your biggest market outside Taiwan?
Is currently Asia and Southeast Asia, including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand
What have you planned for the future?
Due to EU environmental regulations, turbo engines of European cars have been fully configured, and we believe that in the near future, we will have full range of turbine engine configuration on all new car models. We will continue to improve on our R&D process for the benefit of our customers!
